Did you know?
In British Columbia, any worker who fells a whole tree from the base larger than 15cm in diameter, measured at 30cm from the base of the tree must be certified to the BC Faller Training Standard (BCFTS). For arborist technicians and utility arborists, SkilledTradesBC administers arborist training and faller certification is gained through HortEducationBC WUAA/HEBC Falling and Bucking Endorsement.
A worker who holds a faller certificate is considered to have met the minimum training requirements in the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulation for falling in a forestry operation.
Recycling
Your tree parts have environmental value. Branches are chipped into arborist mulch that can be left onsite to spread on paths, flower bed and under trees as a way of organically feeding them while maintaining moisture in the root zone. Wood can be left in longer lengths to be milled for lumber/live edge, bucked into firewood or simply left in a forested area to break down into the soil. Stems can be left standing and carved to create habitat stems for wildlife.
Alternatives for Tree Removal
Habitat Stems
Often referred to as wildlife trees used to create habitat while maintaining a forest aesthetic, it can extend a hazard tree's life by up to 10 years providing valuable habitat before complete removal is necessary. We do this by retaining the scaffold structure/stem of the tree, reducing the canopy to a size that if the tree or branch was to fail no harm would be done. The top of the tree is carved to imitate a natural breakout/failure and the branches below are kept to maintain a forest aesthetic.
Natural habitat features found in trees include, cavities, loose bark, perches, witches broom, excavation & feeding holes from Birds, Animals and Insects. Wildlife trees provide valuable habitat for the conservation or enhancement of wildlife.
Retrenchment Pruning
Used to manage mature trees. It’s the process of reducing the outer canopy back to the scaffold structure of the tree. Pruning using heading cuts where regrowth will form from those pruning points to create a new canopy and new management plan. This is a way of retaining a mature tree when safety is a concern.
